Roti Kirai @ Geylang Serai market

as i mentioned earlier, i went to geylang serai market to eat roti kirai. Roti kirai, aka roti jala, aka net bread (roti=bread, jala=net), is a malay type of lacy pancake that is usually accompanied by curry, or , it can also be in wrap form, where the roti kirai wraps up some curry potatoes. Im not sure about this, but i noticed that usually the wrap ones are refered to as roti jala and the dip in curry ones as roti kirai. hmmmm...oh and btw, roti kirai is one of my fav dishes :)

 nearest MRT: Paya lebar
Geylang Serai Market
The Food Court is on the second floor

In my sec sch, my canteen does serve roti kirai, but only on tuesdays. its my fav dish in sch so when they do sell,i usually buy around 3 to 5 pieces hehe :) but ive just graduated and so it had been 4 months without my beloved roti kirai. recently, i missed it so bad that i just had to go on a mission to find it. Yishun is roti kirailess:((there is the preordered roti jala at chong pang but that one is just so soggy and...not nice) Read online and heard from friends that Geylang serai market have, but its a breakfast item and usually gets sold out by afternoon. So...off i went but i have to admit it was tiresome, but worth it, to drag myself out of bed early in the morning. im not much of a morning person u see. so this is my first plate of roti kirai for the year. :D   (sidetrack: I had my first Roti kirai when i was dunno 4 or 5, at a fair at the horse racing stadium at i cant rmb where. it was there that i fell head over heels for roti kirai)

  <-- $3, 3pc

The roti kirai is just the way i like it, slightly chewy, not soggy, and stringy! try tearing it apart and you'll realise it has about as mush stretch as a mozzerella cheese. the chicken curry complements it perfectly well. however, i find the 'salad' abit out of place, in fact, unnecessary. but oh well, its no big deal. One thing that buggs me is that they served it on a styrofoam plate. its annoying, cos when i use my fork and spoon to tear it into pieces, the styrofoam plate gets scrapped very badly... and i dun wanna ingest styrofoam, no matter how minute the amount may be. This dish is priced at $3, for 3 pieces of roti kirai, chicken curry with chicken (yeah!) , and uh... "salad".   I seriously cant rmb the stall name , but it is in the same row of stalls as the stall called "YES BOSS". haha, funny name. btw YES BOSS also sells roti kirai, and if i have time i shall do a review on their kirai.

Halfway through my meal, a very friendly mak cik came and sat beside me,ordered kopi and thosai, and started chatting with me in malayu. i just sat there and nodded dumbly to everything she said lol. the only thing i said to her was "sedap". i think she knew i could not speak malay, but just wanted to keep me company. Touching :') . That, i guess, is the kampong spirit of inclusiveness, which Singapore used to have but now lack direly. Halfway through my meal too, a kopi pak cik came and asked if i wanted any drinks. but instead, he was so friendly that we actualy started a convo. haha he thought that i was a tourist, and was surprised to know im a yishun girl.so we sort of became friends. Although initially i did not want any drinks, i just felt obliged to patronise his stall. so i ordered an ice milo. See, the magic of good service and hospitality at work.

                                                                    ice milo, $1.50.
Quite a big cup though, i could not finish. My stomach is weird, can hold alot of food but cannot hold alot of water. so in other words a drink would make me fuller than a meal would.

3 pieces of kirai was not enough to satisfy my Kirai Kravings, but i was feeling sorta full to have another plate at that momment...... sooooo....

I packeted back Roti Kirai from a stall called Kasturi. Kasturi seems to be very popular for its bryani, should check it out one day. the lady incharge was kinda unfriendly (and busy, and fustrated) ,so i did not dare take a photo.

However, i managed to find a pic of it

Thank you :)

However their shop does not exactly look like that now, like they changed their sighboard and stuff like that, but one thing did not change: their stall was as green as ever. okay lah, maybe a bit more yellow, based on my rusty memmory.

Kasturi's Roti Kirai, 4pc, $4
The roti kirai is about the same as the $3 roti kirai mentioned above.Except abit more orangy (could be because of more tumeric or addition of curry powder). So far so good :). BUTT...the curry. It is just too saltish. thats mutton curry btw. and the mutton isnt tendor. its dry. Not to my liking, but thats alright, the mutton isnt the star of the show. the problem is that just a little teensyweensy bit of curry on the kirai, and the taste of the kirai is totally masked up.  I want the curry to complement the kirai, not mask it up, so that i can taste both the curry and kirai. Anyway, i throughoutly enjoyed the roti kirai, though i din't use as much of the curry as i normally would.

Had fun unfolding the roti kirai

actually i felt like i could do with another 3 more roti kirais, but nevermind...

So today i had 7 roti kirais! -clap clap claps-   yay me :D

After my stint at Geylang Serai Market, i went exploring around that area and got lost, although i was relying on my GPS. I definitely did walk far more than 2.4km. thats my exercise :P

anyway, in the process of getting lost, i found lots of interesting things and places

                                                                  discarded onion :(

weird snake toy. the toungue is at the wrong place

Double and single digit block numbers. Must be very old

Wanna eat at these places someday

Oh and for those who think that roti kirai moulds can only be found in Malaysia?

WRONG! HAHA! BECAUSE I FOUND ONE IN SINGAPORE ! HAHAHAHAHAHA

so its in this shop that i found it

now i can make my own kirais :') *hopefully
